Photography

I like to kid that I took up photography so that I would never again have to be on the “wrong” side of the lens. Truth be told, when I got my first real 35 MM camera (a Chinon CP7m which I still have) I discovered that making images held an almost mystical sense of power. Looking through the eye piece of a camera has a unique way of helping you to see the world. It sharpens your visual senses and forces you to really look at the everyday in a different way.

When I was a teenager I dreamed of becoming a professional photographer. In 1995 I graduated from James Madison University with a BS in Art with a concentration in Photography. Unfortunately, long before the day I received my diploma, I had come to the terrible realization that making a living at photography was probably not my calling in life. After graduation I ended up falling into the Information Technology world and that is where I have been ever since. I still dream of some day making a living at photography though…

Currently I shoot most of my images with the Canon Digital Rebel (otherwise known as the 300D). I am on my second Digital Rebel body. The first, a silver model, was flooded in July 2006 after an accident with the lens port o-ring on my Ikelite housing. The second, a black model, is a refurbished body that I bought on eBay to replace the first body.

I am currently in the process of redesigning my online portfolio of images so check back soon if you want to see a sample of my work.

Some of my favorite photography related web sites

Wetpixel.com
Wetpixel.com is probably one of, if not the, best resources on the Web for digital underwater photographers. The site has news, feature articles, and forums for discussing equipment and techniques with participants including manufacturers and professional photographers like Stephen Frink and many others.

Digital Photography Review
Excellent site for the latest news in the digital photography world. The site includes the best, in depth reviews of new cameras as they come out.

Underwater Photography Magazine
This is an awesome downloadable magazing devoted 100% to the art of underwater photography. And I am not just saying that because I had an article in the April/May 2003 edition of the magazine.

photoSIG
photoSIG is a community of photographers and photography enthusiasts, ranging from amateurs to working professionals. photoSIG members may critique photos that have been submitted by other users and may also submit their own photos for review by the community. The critiques can be silly, and even useless at times, but overall it is a very supportive community featuring a diverse set of styles and range of talent.
